GRANT TO HELP SENIORS AVOID FALLS
Monday, May 04, 2009
BUFFALO – D’Youville College has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the
Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York in support
of a collaborative program to help older adults reduce falls.
“Based
on the need to address fall prevention in older adults, D’Youville will
establish partnerships with Catholic Charities of Buffalo and Delta
Development of Western New York to initiate outreach programs to
approximately 300 elders and caregivers on the West Side of Buffalo,”
according to Dr. Merlene C. Gingher, associate professor of
occupational therapy at the college and project director.
D’Youville’s
Departments of Nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy have
developed a service learning course that will have students taking
courses on reducing the incidence of and risk of falls and work with
older residents in apartment buildings on the West Side. Students will
also focus on mobility, medication management, and home safety.
The
intent of the program is to develop a set of common practices designed
to reduce the incidence of falls for older adults in Erie County
through development, implementation and evaluation of falls prevention
strategies, which may include screening, assessment, self-management,
and other practice changes, according to Gingher.
The Foundation
recently announced the launch of its Fall Prevention Collaborative in
Erie County with the goal of reducing falls and keeping older adults
living safely in the community for as long as possible. Grants to a
number of local institutions involved in the collaborative were also
announced.
Delta Development of WNY, Inc. is a property
management group that manages the housing units for older adult clients
of Catholic Charities.
The Community Health Foundation is a
non-profit private foundation, the mission of which is to improve the
health and health care of the people of Western and Central New York.
